Leaf and Yard Waste

Leaf and yard waste are collected from April until November in urban areas. 

Find your zone

Residents who live outside of zones 1, 2 and 3 can bring leaf and yard waste free of charge to Norfolk's transfer stations in paper bags or bulk for composting. Loads of brush and branches will be charged the regular tipping fee.

Calendar Schedule for 2025

Pick-up is for urban areas only. You can put out your leaf and yard items following the guidelines below on your regular garbage and recycling collection day.

Pick-up weeks by Zone:

Zone 1: April 7 to 11 and April 21 to 25

Zones 2 and 3: April 14 to 17, and pick up on April 19 due to Good Friday, and April 28 to May 2.

Pick-up weeks by Zone:

Zone 1: May 5 to 9 and May 20 to 24 (note: Monday, May 19, no pick-up due to Victoria Day)

Zones 2 and 3: April 28 to May 2, May 12 to 16 and May 26 to 30

June calendar

Pick-up weeks by Zone:

Zone 1: June 2 to 6

Zone 2: June 9 to 13

Zone 3: June 16 to 20

No leaf and yard pick-up from June 23 to 30.

July calendar

Pick-up weeks by Zone:

Zone 1: July to 11

Zone 2: July 14 to 18

Zone 3: July 21 to 25

No pick-up July 28 to 31

August calendar

Zone 1: August 11 to 15

No pick-up from October 1 to 17.

When to put your leaf and yard bags out

Guidelines

  • All leaves and yard waste must be placed curbside in brown paper leaf bags with the tops rolled shut
  • Plastic bags will not be collected
  • There is no bag limit for paper bags
  • Weight limit is 18kg (40lbs) per bag
  • Do not include garbage, burnt leaves, flower pots, or animal waste allowed
  • Trimmings may be tied or bundled in less than 3’ (91 cm) lengths
  • No plastic twine or metal ties on bundles

Other options to dispose of your leaves

  • Mulch leaves to use in gardens or flowerbeds, or leave them on your grass
  • Compost leaves in your backyard composter
