About Norfolk GIS
Norfolk GIS (Geographic Information System) is part of the Planning Department at Norfolk County.
Norfolk GIS is responsible for creating, maintaining, cataloguing, and distributing GIS data and support to Norfolk staff, the GIS community, and the public. Norfolk GIS is also responsible for civic addressing and street naming.
GIS is a computer system that incorporates geographical features with tabular data to store, manipulate, analyze, and display data on a map. Each feature contains spatial data to locate it on the earth’s surface and additional data to capture other important attributes of the feature. For example, the actual location of a bridge is the spatial data, and the name, length, and age of the bridge might be its attribute data.
Geographic boundaries define municipalities and local governments. Municipal services relate to that geography, from roads and sewers to parks and recreational facilities. Location is an important aspect of most municipal information.
