Grass Cutting Request
Norfolk County ensures well-maintained roadways and public spaces through scheduled grass-cutting and environmental stewardship.
Submit a grass cutting request
Please report a grass-cutting request for a County-maintained area.
Roadways
Norfolk County maintains over 2,000 kilometres of roadways. This includes cutting the grass along the roadside shoulder and ditch area twice yearly in late June and early October.
Parks and facilities
Grass is maintained at all County-operated parks, trails, cemeteries, community centers, administration buildings, and operational facilities.
Monarch butterfly hatch
You may observe some long roadside grass during the late summer weeks. This is intentional to benefit the monarch butterfly hatch and all pollinators.
Geese management
The grass is intentionally left long in several parks with water features to discourage geese from nesting there.
Storm Water Management Ponds (SWMPs)
SWMPs are facilities that collect runoff from the local storm sewer system following rainfall and snowmelt. These ponds temporarily hold water, treat it to remove pollutants, and slowly release it back into our waterways.
All SWMPs are scheduled for cleanout every 4-5 years. Routine maintenance includes:
- Removal of debris in and around the pond
- Removal of invasive vegetation
- Maintenance of structures (gates, locks, valves, etc.)
- Maintenance of surrounding vegetation and plants
The vegetation around the pond is dense and appropriate for the area. Aggressive weed control operations, including the use of pesticides, are generally not required. However, we may spray ponds for invasive species such as phragmites. Grass cutting is not recommended for the ponds to maintain a natural environment.
