Department Sees continued growth in Norfolk County

Norfolk County’s Building Department saw steady growth throughout 2022 – including 1,230 building permits issued for over $165 million in construction value.

“A $27 million expansion to the Toyotetsu plant in Simcoe along with 268 new residential dwellings helped push us to the nearly $1 billion mark in total construction value by permits over the last 10 years”, explains Fritz Enzlin, Norfolk County’s Chief Building Official. “That’s a good sign of healthy building activity in Norfolk. We foresee some long-term, continued building investment into the future.”

As a result of efficiencies and enhancements put in place in the department, including a revised website, the average building permit and zoning review timeline has been reduced by 25-40 percent.

“One of the most impressive tools is our new online portal,” said Building Inspector Scott Northcott. “It allows users to apply and check on the status of the permit 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the comfort of their home or office.”

While staff see the benefits the online portal introduces, they continue to work closely with customers and provide ongoing communication with the construction industry.

Residents can take advantage of this updated process by submitting a complete application that includes zoning confirmation, conservation authority permit (if needed), and lot grading clearance, along with the proper application forms, fees, and drawings. Those applying are also encouraged to submit building permits early to avoid the spring and summer rush.
