Fireworks rules and safety tips for long weekends

As residents prepare to celebrate long weekends this summer, Norfolk County is reminding the community about the importance of adhering to fireworks rules and safety practices.

Know the rules:

Residents are urged to familiarize themselves with Norfolk County’s Fireworks Regulating By-Law to ensure compliance and safety. Key regulations include:

  • Fireworks are permitted two days before and up to one day after New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day Monday, Canada Day, US Independence Day, Civic Holiday Monday, and Labour Day Monday.
  • Fireworks may only be discharged up to 11 p.m.
  • Discharging fireworks on municipal property or roadways is not allowed.
  • The fireworks user must either own the property on which they are discharging or have explicit permission from the property owner.

Safety tips:

County staff strongly encourage residents who are planning family fireworks displays or informal neighbourhood gatherings to follow these essential safety tips:

  • Only adults who are fully aware of the hazards and necessary safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks.
  • Always have a water hose or pail of water nearby to extinguish any unexpected fires quickly.
  • To prevent accidental ignition, discharge fireworks far away from combustible materials such as buildings, trees, and dry grass.
