Mayor Amy Martin to take unpaid leave during provincial election campaign
Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin has provided notice that she will take an unpaid leave of absence from her role as Mayor beginning Wednesday, January 29, 2025, ahead of the February 27, 2025, Provincial Election.
According to Norfolk County’s Procedural By-law, when the Mayor is absent, the Deputy Mayor acts in place of the Mayor. During the current four-year term of Council, Councillors rotate into the Deputy Mayor position every six months.
The current Deputy Mayor is Ward 5 Councillor Doug Brunton, and he will serve as Acting Mayor during the Provincial Election campaign period to ensure continuity in leadership and the delivery of services to residents.
In addition to her unpaid leave of absence from Norfolk County, Mayor Martin will also be taking leave from the following unpaid positions: Chair of the Grand Erie Public Health’s Board of Health, Chair of SCOR EDC (South Central Ontario Region Economic Development Corporation), and Chair of WOWC (Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus).
During this time, members of Council, the Clerk’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer will continue to advance the important work of moving Norfolk’s business forward and addressing the needs of the community.
Depending on the results of the February 27 Provincial Election, Mayor Martin will either resume her role as Mayor, or Norfolk County Council will begin the process of filling any resulting vacancy, as outlined by the Municipal Act.
