Norfolk County ready for winter weather

Norfolk County is preparing for another winter in southern Ontario. This means that plows will be clearing all municipally maintained roads when a snow event has occurred.

When winter weather events such as snow or freezing rain take place, Norfolk County resources will be deployed as soon as practicable to remove accumulation. All roads will be cleared within the time as specified in the Minimum Maintenance Standards unless, a “significant snow event” is declared by County officials.

When a snow event has occurred or is expected to occur, there is to be no parking on any County streets until after the snow event has ceased and snow removal has been completed. Residents who park their cars on streets blocking snow removal will be subject to a $75 parking ticket and the expense of a tow bill.

What Residents Can Do

During the winter season, Norfolk County maintains 4,200 kilometres of roads. Residents can help with the removal of snow from streets and sidewalks by following road safety and parking rules:

  • Please wait an appropriate amount of time after the cessation of a snow event before calling or emailing your concerns. It takes time to clean up after a storm. Your patience is appreciated.
  • Property and business owners are reminded to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks around their property by noon the day after a storm (Bylaw 2002-259 — Section 2)
  • Do not park vehicles on the street during a snowfall or declared snow event (Bylaw 2011-189  Section 8.5). Also, please do not leave vehicles over the sidewalk while in your driveway as this can prevent the sidewalk plow from completing its work.
  • Do not shovel, plow or blow snow from residential or commercial properties onto the road or across the road. This poses a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and County bylaws.
  • Snowplows need room to clear the snow. Please stay clear of all snow clearing equipment.

Updates will be posted on Norfolk County’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and residents can also call ServiceNorfolk at 519-426-5870 or 226-NORFOLK for more information.
