Norfolk County's first decorative crosswalk installed

Yesterday, Norfolk County completed the installation of its first decorative crosswalk at the intersection of Norfolk Street and Union Street in Simcoe.

The crosswalk, approved by Norfolk County Council in May 2022, was funded by a project called “Ryder’s Rainbow” initiated by Port Dover youngster Ryder Mandryk. Ryder made a deputation to Council in July of 2021 requesting a rainbow crosswalk to show support to the LGBQT+ community. The community rallied to support the initiative and raised over $30,000, more than enough to cover the cost of the project, which was $15,000.

“I’m so pleased to see a young resident of Norfolk County make a difference to promote and raise funds in the name of inclusivity,” said Mayor Amy Martin. “Ryder is a shining example of what can happen when a member of the community follows their heart to do something they believe in.”

Studies have shown that high-visibility crosswalks are easier for motorists to see and have reduced vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Decorative crosswalks and other streetscape projects can also boost economic growth through increased investment in nearby properties and downtown revitalization.

In March 2023, Norfolk County approved the Decorative Crosswalk Policy that defines the roles, responsibilities, and processes to implement, install and maintain decorative crosswalks.
