Haldimand-Norfolk’s Health and Social Services (HNHSS) division has received funding that will assist those who are experiencing homelessness, or at risk of becoming homeless.

The Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing recently announced an additional $202 million in annual funding for homelessness prevention programs to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and to support community organizations delivering supportive housing.

The HNHSS team will receive an additional $1.7 million in funding for the Homeless Prevention Program, bringing the total funding to $3,610,300.

Funding decisions were based on census data, demonstrated need, and the ability of community organizations to run programs and services that meet the needs of their residents, a positive sign that HNHSS staff have a strong history of using funds effectively.

“We’re grateful to receive this funding from our colleagues at the Province of Ontario, it shows they value the work our staff does,” said Mayor Amy Martin. “This increase will make an incredible difference to those experiencing hardship within Haldimand and Norfolk County. I’d like to thank the province for their support.”

Two-thirds of the funding will go towards housing services, the housing stabilization fund that assists low-income individuals with rent, utility bills, etc., the Emergency Shelter Service, and other programs, including a fully funded warming shelter in Simcoe this winter.

One-third of the funding is earmarked for five full-time, front-line employees who will be added to the team to support the enhancements the funding will enable, such as supporting the homelessness prevention intake line (519-426-6170 or 905-318-6623 Ext. 3134). The additional staff will also enhance safety by enabling staff to visit and assess “crisis situations” in pairs.

“Having more staff resources means we can do be on the ground in our communities more often,” said Stephanie Rice, Director, Social Services and Housing. “These funds indicate just how important our staff are for local individuals experiencing homelessness.”
