Norfolk County is joining communities across Ontario for “Test Your Smoke Alarm Day” on September 28, an initiative focused on enhancing fire safety. Also known as “Saved by the Beep,” the day serves as a vital reminder for everyone to check that their smoke alarms are functioning properly—a simple action that could save lives.

On September 28, residents are encouraged to test their smoke alarms, check the batteries, and ensure alarms are installed on every level of their homes. Working smoke alarms are the best way to be alerted to a fire, giving you and your family the time needed to escape.

Fire safety experts recommend testing smoke alarms at least once a month, replacing batteries at least once a year, and replacing alarms older than 10 years. It’s also important to ensure your alarms are not expired and meet current safety standards.

The Norfolk County Fire Department invites everyone to participate in the day by sharing a photo of themselves testing their alarms. Post your photos on social media using the hashtag #SavedByTheBeep to help spread awareness and promote fire safety in your community.
